What to Expect After Microneedling: Your Day-by-Day Skin Healing Guide
The redness, the healing, the glow. ✨
Thinking about microneedling but wondering what your skin will look and feel like afterward?
You're not alone! One of the most common questions we hear at The Natural Art of Skin Care is, "What's the downtime like after microneedling?"
The good news? For most people, the initial recovery is relatively quick, and the long-term skin benefits are worth the wait.
Microneedling is one of our favourite treatments for improving skin texture, softening fine lines, minimizing the appearance of acne scars, and encouraging natural collagen production.
But beautiful skin doesn't happen overnight. Your skin goes through a healing and renewal process following treatment, and knowing what to expect can make all the difference.
Here's a look at the first seven days after microneedling, along with our best tips for caring for your skin.
Day 1: The Redness ❤️
What to expect: Redness, warmth, and mild swelling.
Immediately after your microneedling treatment, your skin will likely look quite red, similar to a mild sunburn. You may also experience some swelling, warmth, tightness, and sensitivity.
Don't panic! These are common reactions to microneedling.
During your treatment, tiny, controlled micro-injuries are created in the skin, stimulating its natural repair response and encouraging collagen and elastin production.
The redness typically begins to settle within the first 24 hours, although some people may experience it for longer.
Our skin care tips:
Avoid direct sun exposure and excessive heat, including saunas and hot tubs.
Skip makeup for the first 24 hours or longer, as directed by your esthetician.
Avoid strenuous exercise and excessive sweating for at least 24 hours.
Only use the gentle, approved skincare products recommended after your treatment.
Keep your hands off your face!
Remember: Your skin is especially sensitive during this stage. Less is more.
Day 2: The Healing 💛
What to expect: Less redness, mild tightness, and dryness.
By day two, the redness and swelling should begin to settle, and your skin will start feeling a little more like itself.
You might notice some tightness, dryness, sensitivity, or a slightly rough texture. This is all part of your skin's natural healing process.
Your skin barrier is still recovering, so now isn't the time to experiment with new skincare products or active ingredients.
Our skin care tips:
Cleanse gently with a mild, non-exfoliating cleanser.
Keep your skin hydrated with an approved moisturizer.
Avoid retinol, exfoliating acids, scrubs, strong vitamin C formulas, and fragranced skincare.
Protect your skin from the sun and follow your provider's SPF instructions.
We generally recommend avoiding active skincare ingredients for approximately seven days, or until your skin has fully recovered.
Day 3: The Renewal 🦋
What to expect: Dryness, rough texture, or light flaking.
By day three, most of the initial redness should be fading, but you may notice something new: your skin feels dry, slightly rough, or even a little flaky.
This can be a normal part of the recovery process.
As your skin heals, some superficial dryness and flaking may occur. Not everyone experiences peeling, and that's perfectly normal too!
The most important thing? Don't pick, peel, or exfoliate your skin.
We know it's tempting, but removing flaky skin prematurely can cause irritation and interfere with healing.
Our skin care tips:
Continue with gentle cleansing and moisturizing.
Layer hydration using approved, non-irritating products.
If your esthetician recommends it, a gentle oil cleanser may be introduced once the skin has sufficiently recovered.
Avoid exfoliating brushes, scrubs, and active skincare ingredients.
Give your skin time to do its thing!
Day 4: The Recovery 🤍
What to expect: Calmer skin and improving texture.
By day four, your skin should be looking and feeling much more like itself.
Redness is usually minimal, although some dryness, tightness, or light flaking may still be present.
At this stage, your skin is continuing to repair itself beneath the surface, even if everything looks relatively normal on the outside.
Our skin care tips:
Continue using a gentle skincare routine.
Keep your skin well hydrated.
Wear broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher daily once your skin can tolerate it.
Avoid picking at any remaining dry or flaky areas.
Hold off on exfoliating treatments until your skin has fully recovered.
Consistency is key. A simple, supportive skincare routine is exactly what your skin needs right now.
Days 5–7: The Glow ✨
What to expect: Smoother, brighter, more refreshed-looking skin.
This is where things start getting exciting!
By days five through seven, most visible signs of healing have settled, and your complexion may begin looking smoother, brighter, and more refreshed.
Your skin may feel softer, and some of that initial post-treatment glow may start to appear.
But here's something important to remember:
The real magic of microneedling happens beneath the surface.
Although you may notice early improvements within the first week, collagen remodeling continues over the following weeks and months.
That means your results can continue developing long after the initial healing period.
Our skin care tips:
Continue prioritizing hydration.
Stay consistent with your daily SPF.
Gradually reintroduce active skincare products only once your skin has recovered and your esthetician has advised it's safe.
Maintain a consistent home-care routine to support your results.
Patience pays off when it comes to collagen!
-
Your aftercare routine is just as important as the treatment itself!
During the initial healing period, avoid:
Direct sun exposure and tanning.
Retinol, exfoliating acids, harsh scrubs, and other irritating active ingredients.
Saunas, hot tubs, and excessive heat.
Picking or peeling dry skin.
Applying unapproved skincare products to freshly treated skin.
Always follow the personalized aftercare instructions provided by your esthetician, as recovery timelines can vary depending on treatment depth and skin sensitivity.
When to contact your provider: If redness or swelling worsens rather than improves, or you develop increasing pain, spreading warmth, pus, fever, or other unusual symptoms, contact your treatment provider promptly.
-
One treatment can help improve the overall appearance and texture of your skin, but a series is often recommended for more noticeable, lasting improvements.
For concerns such as acne scarring, fine lines, uneven texture, and visible signs of aging, multiple treatments may provide better results.
Our microneedling treatment options include:
Single Session — $399
3 Sessions — $897
5 Sessions — $1,375
Your esthetician will help determine the appropriate number of sessions and spacing between treatments based on your skin's needs.
-
While your skin may look brighter and feel smoother within the first week, more significant improvements in texture, fine lines, and acne scarring take time.
Microneedling works by stimulating your skin's natural collagen and elastin production, a process that continues for weeks and months after treatment.
Depending on your skin concerns and treatment goals, a series of treatments may be recommended.
At The Natural Art of Skin Care, we customize your microneedling plan based on your skin's condition, individual concerns, and desired results.
